Taste of Home Away from Home is a photographic project about memory, migration, and the quiet rituals of cooking. It follows six foreigners that live in Amsterdam as they recreate the dishes they grew up with. In small kitchens, they search for familiar tastes using unfamiliar ingredients, each meal a quiet attempt to feel a little closer to home.
During the year this project took shape, “home” began to shift – no longer just a place, but something quieter and more sacred. For some, war was already present; for others, the unimaginable had only just begun. Families were separated, borders closed, realities redefined. Some found a new sense of belonging. Others, after years apart, were finally able to return. These changes linger beneath the surface of their stories, subtle, but impossible to ignore.
What we call “home” gathers new weight, a kind of quiet unease that doesn’t easily translate. And maybe one way to make sense of it, or to feel something close to normal, is to keep remembering. To speak about it. To never forget. To sit down with those who are still near, and share something familiar, something made with care, like a home-cooked meal.
“For me, this project is about more than food. It’s about how we carry the places we come from, how scent and texture can hold a whole life, and how photography can witness what happens between where we are and where we’ve been.” – Ioana Enescu
